Directors and Staff

As director of Camp Dark Waters since 2000, Travis Simmons comes to camp with several years of experience teaching and directing a New England environmental education school, offering week-long residential programs. He spent 14 years working in summer camps in Indiana, Minnesota, New Mexico and New Jersey as a counselor, archery director, waterfront director, unit director, and camp director. Travis also has two years experience supervising adjudicated youth in group homes and two more years working for the Boys' and Girls' Clubs. He has a bachelor's degree in Business and Recreation.

Reid Bush first came to Camp Dark Waters as a counselor in 1957. Since then he has directed canoeing and tripping programs, and been the water front head. For over ten years he has been an assistant director taking charge of maintenance and various administrative tasks including management of the ropes course. Seven different summers Reid traveled out west with colleagues, campers and students. A science teacher at Baltimore Friends and Moorestown Friends and department head at the Wm.Penn Charter School, he has been semi-retired since 1982. Reid is the director and founder of the Dark Waters Scholarship Foundation. Member: Association of Challenge Course Technology. Certified Pool Operator.

The staff consists of the Director, Assistant Director, Program Director, counselors, nurse, and kitchen staff. Counselors are mostly college-age men and women who understand children and take a friendly interest in them. Our 4:1 camper-to-counselor ratio makes it possible for each camper to receive individual attention. Our counselors come from foreign countries as well as the United States and are as diverse in interest and background as our mix of campers.
